SLATE OUTDOOR WATER FOUNTAIN
Three Columns, Three Heights, Three Strips of Light
Three slate faced columns of different heights standing together, each capped with an LED strip that lights the water from the top down. The faces are scored in fine horizontal bands, so water descends as threads rather than as a sheet. Dark gray green throughout, on a plain base.
Three heights rather than one is what makes this read as composition rather than as a slab. Your eye moves across the group, the silhouette changes as you walk past, and the piece has a front, a side, and an angle rather than a single correct view. A single column of the same height and finish would be a wall.
Lighting from the top edge rather than the base is unusual and it matters. Light entering at the top runs down through the water for the full height, so the whole face glows rather than just the bottom few inches.
What Makes This Fountain Different
- Lit from the top edge, not the base, which changes the whole night effect. Base lighting illuminates the last few inches of water and leaves the rest of the face dark, which is why most lit water walls look like they have a lamp at the bottom. Running an LED strip along the top cap sends light down through the descending water for the entire height, so the face reads as a lit surface rather than as a dark panel with a glow at its foot.
- Three heights make a composition. Staggering the columns means the outline changes as you move, and the group has depth rather than presenting one flat face. It also breaks the water into three separate descents at three levels, which gives the sound more variation than a single sheet.
- Fine horizontal ribbing. The scored faces split the water into threads and hold it against the surface, so it never falls clear. That keeps the piece quiet and makes the descending water visible as texture rather than as a smooth film.
- Seventeen and a half pounds. Light enough for one person to position, which matters on a piece that needs to be tried against different backgrounds before it settles.
Quiet and continuous. The ribbed faces hold the water in contact for the whole descent, so nothing falls freely and nothing lands hard. Three columns at three heights give slight variation rather than one flat note. It works beside seating and will not carry across a garden. How loud it seems will still shift with the water level and whether it stands against a wall, which is why a fixed decibel number would tell you nothing useful about your own space.

Setup, Care, and Warranty
Setup and placement
Fill it, plug it in, done. One person can carry it at 17.6 pounds.
Set it level. Uneven ground sends the water down one edge of a face instead of across it, and on a ribbed surface that shows as a dry patch.
Choosing the background
The slate is dark, so a pale wall, render, or light fence makes the staggered outline legible. Against dark planting the shape flattens and you lose the composition that three heights create.
Water level and daily care
Keep enough water in the base to cover the pump so it never runs dry. Water spread thin across three ribbed faces evaporates faster than a contained stream, so check every few days in warm weather.
Keep the ribbing clear. Debris caught in the scoring diverts the flow and leaves visible dry lines on the face.
Cleaning the ribbed faces
In hard water areas mineral film settles into the fine horizontal bands, which is the hardest place to remove it once set. Wipe the faces regularly rather than waiting, and keep abrasives away from the scoring.
Winter storage
Before hard freezes, drain the base completely, disconnect and store the pump indoors, and dry the piece out. At 17.6 pounds bringing it inside is easy.

Questions Before You Choose
Why does top lighting matter?
Because light entering at the top travels down through the descending water and lights the whole face. Base lighting only reaches the last few inches, which is why most lit water walls are dark above and bright at the foot. This is the opposite arrangement and it looks quite different after dark.
What background does it need?
A pale one. The slate is dark gray green, so it reads as three distinct columns against render, a light fence, or a white wall. Against a dark hedge the staggered silhouette disappears and it becomes one mass.
Is it quiet?
Yes, among the quieter pieces here. The ribbed faces hold the water in contact for the entire descent so nothing falls clear. If you want an audible fountain, choose a design where the water leaves the surface.
Is it safe around children and pets?
At 17.6 pounds it can be pushed over, so set it on a hard level surface out of the main running route, ideally against something solid. Run the cord where it will not catch a foot. The recirculating water is not intended for drinking.
